P1: Explain how different sound elements are used
Horror movie scenes
A Quiet Place: Old Man Scene
The purpose of this scene is to make the watcher feel uneasy and tense and this scene is one of the scariest and most tense of the film A Quiet Place. Sound is used to add suspense and tension to the scene and to make it seem scarier, but also more real. Diegetic sound is used throughout, from footsteps through the leaf litter, forest wildlife sounds in background, birds tweeting, wasps buzzing, the monsters making noise and roaring, an old man shouting and the kid panic breathing. In terms of non-diegetic sound, There is eerie and scary sound throughout this scene to increase the fear factor and tension of the scene there is also dialogue being used in this scene, this dialogue is the old man's scream. And soundtrack noises to add to the music to increase the tense feel, giving the audience a feeling that something bad is about to happen. The sound adds to the visuals as the film relies on the sound to make a good film.
IT - Storm Drain Scene
The purpose of this scene is to start the film and get the audience prepared for what to expect in this film. Sound is used to create a spooky and eerie atmosphere, and to make the scene feel more scary and tense, as well as making it sound more real and believable. Diegetic sound such as rainfall and dialogue can be heard non-diegetic sound can be heard in the form of the score background music). The sound adds a scary feel and tense atmosphere as most would go into the film already knowing what Pennywise is capable of, so the tension would be strong in this scene more than any, as this is the scene that starts the whole film. The visuals such do not distract from the sound, the sound and visuals add to each other in sync and play well together in this scene.
Animations
Pink Panther and Pals - The Pink Painter Show (series 1 episode 14)
The purpose of this animation episode is to provide entertainment and laughs for kids. As this is a cartoon with no dialogue, the cartoon's diegetic and non-diegetic sound is used to sync with and make the visuals better. It is used to create comedy further than what the visuals alone can offer. A lot of comic and cartoon sound effects are used to bring out the cartoon without any dialogue (other than big nose's grunts, moans, laughs, screams and cries.) There are a lot of diegetic sounds in the animation that are amplified to a large degree to be the stand out sounds, and there is the non-dietetic background music. The sounds add to the visuals as they all fit the mood or the actions of what is happening in the scene.
Scooby Doo, Where Are You! - Hassle in the Castle (Season 1 Episode 3) - Air Date: 27 September 1969
The purpose of this animation episode is to provide entertainment and laughs for kids. However this cartoon uses mainly dialogue and non-diegetic sound, only using apparent diegetic sound where absolutely necessary, the main purpose of the sound in this is to add to the humour, such as the wacky sound that I have no idea if it is diegetic or non-diegetic, and the audience laugh sound effects. The sound creates a funny, wacky and spooky theme to the cartoon all at the same time. It does this by using mainly music to set the mood and the sound effects to add to the humour with only a few diegetic sounds such as loud footsteps and a saw moving on its own to add to the spooky feel. Here the dialogue stands out the most however, it is the voices of the characters that make the show come to life and make it an enjoyable cartoon to watch, with them reacting to the scene and situation around them while adding jokes and humour to keep the audience interested and give them an even more enjoyable cartoon. The sound here adds to the piece as it creates all the correct themes and atmospheres for this cartoon that couldn't be made without the sound.
Computer Games
Slender The Arrival - Prologue
The purpose of this game is to provide entertainment through scares and jumpscares, while telling the tale of the famous creepypasta known as The Slenderman. The purpose of the prologue is to set up the story and the tense atmosphere for the rest of the game while offering a small taste of the scares we will experience while playing the game, such as The Slenderman at the window, and The Proxy named Charlie in the burned house. While most games use dialogue and background music for a lot of their sound, this game uses dialogue at the bare minimum only using it once at all in this chapter during the phone call, which purpose is to add a layer to the story. While only using music where necessary to keep, or raise the tension, the best example is the bedroom scene. To make the scenes seem more real the majority of the sound is diegetic. Examples of diegetic sound that can be heard are: footsteps, loud rustling of leaves and leaf litter, doors opening and closing, phone answer phone voice and beeps, torch clicks, screams etc. Examples of non-diegetic sound would be the background music, and the ding sound when the missing poster and swings are interacted with. The sound creates an atmosphere that is believable and can get tense at times which add to the overall visuals of the game.
Minecraft
The purpose of the game is to provide entertainment through gameplay. The purpose of the sound in the game is to make the game more believable and realistic, as it is a survival game. The music isn't constantly playing and occurs at random times meaning most of the sound apart from the interactive menu clicks and music are diegetic. Examples of the best diegetic sound would be the door sounds, animal sounds, the water noises and the rushing noise of being underwater. These sounds add to the visuals as they match with the survival like world.
